It’s Not Bull—It’s Buffalo!

Custer State Park—South Dakota

My 2-year old Golden Retriever, Maizie, and I took a leisurely drive, never expecting to get caught in the middle of a herd of buffalo as they crossed the road. It felt exciting, and a little scary.

The herd was larger than any I’d seen in other states. Closer, too.

I drive a big truck, GMC Sierra 3500 diesel. Although I’m a tall woman (5’ 10”), I need to step up onto the running board to get in the driver’s seat. The bottom of the window hits me at shoulder height, or about 5 feet from the ground.

As numerous buffalo walked down the street next to my truck, the top of their humps came to the bottom of my window. I could have reached out and petted them—but only if I was incredibly stupid! Instead, I kept m window up so they couldn’t stick their heads in.

One young animal ran to catch up to her mama. It’s a good thing the rear windows weren’t completely down, or else Maizie would have jumped out to give chase!

Unfortunately, I forgot my phone at the campsite, so I didn’t get any pictures. Darn. Well, that gives me an excuse to go back. I’ll cross my fingers that I get caught in another buffalo herd crossing.
